Economics this week is about financial economics and the current problems facing our nation and facing Europe.
A friend who's a top financial analyst sent his take on the current AMERICAN FINANCIAL SITUATION. You may have other figures but these are his:
"I have done a good deal of study on true debt of USA and have concluded it is at least $80 Trillion (more than five times GDP of USA) using best set of numbers with detail back-up (460slide PowerPoint printed report). It was also the lead article in the February 1st Business Week on Mary Meeker's work on USA Inc. Her details come to $79.6 Trillion, but when carried up to top balance sheet it becomes only $44.3 Trillion. This was done by leaving out Medicaid........The report is good and shows a great many facts about just how unsustainable our debts are now. Once you put into the balance sheet the Medicaid number it becomes $79.6 Trillion ......and most likely be a little higher with true Obamacare costs. I expect this will get into the Congressional discussion at some point and they will stop talking about only $15 Trillion of bonded debts."
THINK OF THAT $80 TRILLION DOLLARS AND FIVE TIMES GDP OF THE USA. Remember GDP--that's our current earning power!!!! WE'RE NOT JUST IN DEBT--WE'RE IN THE KIND OF DEBT THAT CANCELLED HOME OWNER'S MORTGAGES INTO FORECLOSURE. That IS JUST TOTAL GOVERNMENT IRRESPONSIBILITY!! AND THE BLAME REACHES BOTH SIDES OF THE FENCE--DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN.
What we're talking about here is simple. The USA MAY HAVE TO GO ON A FINANCIAL DIET pretty DAMN QUICK much like Greece AND Italy in order to avoid "CHINESE" FORECLOSURE. HOW DID WE GET IN THIS POSITION??????? LOTS OF BAD CHOICES AND BIG SPENDING!!!!!!!!!
Do you realize that FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT TOTALS ARE 21 MILLION (GIVE OR TAKE A FEW)FEDERAL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES AVERAGE SALARIES ANYWHERE FROM $150,000 to $350,000 annually for clerk type jobs. These FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS COMPRISE MORE THAN 16% of the electorate. Do you realize that we pay $180,000 for life of US Presidents (this I think considering the job is justifiable); the salaries of house/senate members, $$174,000 House speakers, $223,500. majority/minority leaders $193,400. AND WE'RE GETTING A LOUSY RETURN ON THE INVESTMENT through INCOMPETENCY!!!!!!!!!
We hear a lot about the cost of the military. It's not the men laying down their lives--they average $38,000. a year AND NOT FOR LIFE. HOW ABOUT THAT DRATTED SOCIAL SECURITY. THE AVERAGE INCOME FOR SENIORS IS ABOUT $12,000 A YEAR FOR LIFE but seniors paid into a fund that was supposed to grow through investment for their future. That went out the window when the government reneged and used the money for other problems. Frankly most seniors don't get that much money.
ALL OF THIS IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG. this blogger COULD GO ON AND ON CITING THE RIDICULOUS DEBTS that our Government has incurred; the ridiculous amounts loaned to ALL COUNTRIES THAT VOTE AGAINST US IN THE UNITED NATIONS where biting the hand that feeds you seems to create a MAJOR SWELLING OF PRIDE; the ludicrous growth of a CENTRAL GOVERNMENT that exceeds all the expectations and needs of the citizens of this country; the MILITARY SPENDING ON HELPING COUNTRIES CORRECT THEIR MASSIVE POLITICAL MISTAKES. There's no doubt in this blogger's mind that there will be tax increases; poor investment return, and little zest in the economy for a period of some years. Just an educated guess. The question is, are the average citizens the only belt-tightening element or is the Government going on a diet that not only tightens the belt but TAKES A LOT OF POUNDS OFF THE ASS END OF GOVERNMENT???????? A CONTROVERSY in the last several months really needs some COUNTERPOINT. IT IS ECONOMIC IN ITS DESIRE TO CHANGE THE OUTLOOK AND HABITS OF PARENTS AND CHILDREN. The concern is that not only has the media landed on it but health and education as well. BE AWARE THAT THESE AGENCIES ARE NOT COMPLETELY WRONG BUT THEY'RE NOT COMPLETELY RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!AND IN THIS CASE-CHILDREN ARE AT STAKE!!!!!!!!!!!
The hoop-la is about the current epidemic of DIABETES. It is a growing concern for HEALTH EXPERTS AND THE NEW HEALTH CARE PROGRAM. THEY ARE SEEING AN EPIDEMIC IN OUR NATION'S CHILDREN. SOUNDS SCARY ........let's look at some facts. Diabetes has been around for thousands of years and the HEALTH RESEARCHERS HAVE NOT FOUND A CURE OR EVEN A REAL REASON FOR IT TO TAKE OVER PEOPLE'S BODIES. WHAT THEY HAVE IS THEORIES BASED ON research AND MEDICINE TO TREAT THE DISEASE. One of the constants is: people who are overweight OFTEN HAVE DIABETES. However, IT ALSO ATTACKS SLIM FOLKS. THE SLIM, HOWEVER, OFTEN DIE EARLIER WITH more COMPLICATIONS. IT HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN THAT DIABETES IS CAUSED BY OVERWEIGHT but it certainly predisposes folks for it!!!!!!!And although some people are helped to get off diabetes medication by diet alone that is not true for all. IT IS A VERY COMPLICATED and ancient DISEASE that modern medicine can't seem to cure.
Some interesting insights into childhood obesity may be in our current mores. In the 1930s EVERYONE WAS TOLD THAT FOR CHILDREN TO GROW STRONG AND HEALTHY THEY MUST BE GIVEN LOTS OF HEALTHY FOOD. Evidently, the POWERS THAT BE IN THIS COUNTRY are concerned that CITIZENS took that advice too LITERALLY and are raising a nation of FAT PEOPLE!!!!!!! Yeah, there's a lot of what is called junk food. But PLU.....EEEEZE. GIVE THE KIDS A BREAK! Do you want them healthy????????OR DO YOU WANT THEM THIN????????? THEY GROW BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS AND ARE HUNGRY MOST OF THE TIME SO THEY INDULGE.
Let the powers that be SCOLD that THE FOOD SHOULD BE MORE NUTRITIOUS. EAT A GOOD BREAKFAST, NOT RAUNCHY SNACKS. EAT MEALS THAT SUPPORT HEALTHY GROWTH. It increases overall health but slimness is not often a consistent result. BUT BECAUSE THE BLAME CAN BE PLACED ON THE PARTICIPANTS AND SINCE AMERICANS CARRY SO MUCH UNNECESSARY GUILT SO THEY ACCEPT THE BLAME.
If the HEALTH INDUSTRY (AND I RIGHTLY CALL IT AN INDUSTRY) HAD ANY IDEA HOW TO MAKE DIETS CONSISTENT AND KEEP WEIGHT DOWN, THEY WOULD HAVE SOLD IT IN PLACE OF HOT CAKES!!!!! FOR MILLIONS. ALL THEY'VE EVER PROFESSED ARE THEORIES!!!!!!!!THAT ONLY WORKS FOR A TIME UNLESS THE DIETER LIVES LIKE A MONK FOREVER. Give the same food to a thin person and a fat person over A period of time and one will lose weight and one will gain weight. Guess which????????? No theory touches that FACTOR!!!!!!!

BOTTLE FED AND NOT BREAST FED. BREAST FEEDING WAS CONSIDERED TO HAVE POOR NUTRITIONAL VALUE PARTICULARLY in the POOR and did not provide WHAT WAS NEEDED for a growing child.
USE FORMULA IT WAS ORDERED SO THAT YOUR CHILDREN GROW HEALTHY AND STRONG!!!!!OKAY!!!
Not THAT many FAT CHILDREN produced on formula and they grew HEALTHY AND STRONG!!!!!!!!!GOOD???????????FOR AWHILE!!!
Then the health EXPERTS got another wild hair up THEIR collective posteriors. NOW THAT WE HAVE THEM ALL HEALTHY AND STRONG AND GROWN, LET'S have these NEW mothers go BACK TO NURSING THEIR YOUNG. It's natural. It's cheap. AND THE STUDIES PROVE (By the way in case you haven't noticed there are studies that prove almost anything) THAT IT IS BETTER FOR THE CHILDREN!!!!!!!

NONE of those studies will mention that it is cost that is driving the change UNLESS in small type. THESE FACTORS MAKE MONEY FOR SOMEONE SOMEWHERE!!!!!!!! BEWARE THE LOSS OF COMMON SENSE. THERE IS NO INTELLECT TO REPLACE IT TAUGHT IN ANY UNIVERSITY. It is an essential ingredient in life and particularly in raising one's child.
There are other factors that differ in our current society that THE AFOREMENTIONED STUDIES often do not take into account. New mothers come from varying backgrounds that MIGHT include heavy ALCOHOLIC intake, heavy DRUG use, STRINGENT (NEAR BULIMIC) diets that take weight down to dangerous levels, heavy and OBSESSIVE-EMOTIONAL eating PLUS dozens of other abuses that cause bodily changes EVEN IF ONLY PRIOR to pregnancy. HOW MUCH DOES ALL THIS AFFECT THE BABY????????????? WHAT CHANGES IN CHEMISTRY EXIST??????? WHAT DIFFERENCES happen IN the baby's INTAKE and ABILITY TO UTILIZE AND DIGEST FOODS????? WHAT CHANGES IN THE MOTHER'S MILK??????????? SHOULDN'T THE INDUSTRY BE EXPLORING ALL OF THESE ELEMENTS AND MANY THIS BLOGGER HASN'T THOUGHT ABOUT BEFORE RAILING at CHILDREN FOR BEING FAT!!!!!!!!!
And in many ways aren't many of those conditions MUCH THE SAME as the ones in the thirties when FORMULA was BOO NED FOR HEALTHY BABIES AND FUTURE CHILDREN?? Starving for dieting to achieve model-like thinness isn't much different from starving from poverty. Doesn't poverty often include the abuse of drink and drugs??????? THINK hard BEFORE ACTING ON a THEORY whether supported by well-known health agencies, media or education.
THESE STUDIES ARE DONE BY PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARMED WITH CREDENTIALS AND MEANING-WELL THAT MAKE THEIR VIEWS SOUND RATIONAL. BUT..... ARE THEY?????? YOU HAVE TO BE THE JUDGE. DON'T CONDEMN YOUR OVERWEIGHT CHILD TO A LIFE OF ABUSE AND TORMENT BUT DEMAND COMPLETE INFORMATION NOT THEORY.
THIN IS NOT ALWAYS HEALTHIER. Americans come from all sorts of backgrounds. Italians and Spanish often come from a background of heavier, sturdy folks who worked in the fields in past centuries. The English background often sports lean frames although country portly is not unusual, the same as the Germans, Poles and Russians. Asians are often slim but Buddha is often portrayed as portly as is Hotai. In the not too distant past, being overweight denoted wealth which took health and industry.
There are genes that we pass on to children. THERE IS STILL MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT GENES AND THEIR EFFECTS. PASSING ALONG characteristics and traits INCLUDES BODY MASS.

HOW MUCH DOES ALL THIS AFFECT THE BABY????????????? WHAT CHANGES IN CHEMISTRY EXIST??????? WHAT DIFFERENCES happen IN the baby's INTAKE and ABILITY TO UTILIZE AND DIGEST FOODS????? Greece is sure making the Euro Union look like what it is--A Socialist idea that is bad for the involved countries. The problem is that when one country goes sour, they are all affected and on the line.
And the Greek folks like people everywhere have gotten used to the perks that the Socialist Government gave them and promised they would always have. THE citizens DON'T WANT TO GIVE THEM BACK!!!!!!!!!! The so-called "have-nots" benefited from the "so-called haves" sharing their hard won earnings to such an extent that the "haves" are now "have-nots" and the former "have-not's" WILL ONCE AGAIN BE "HAVE-NOTS". NO "HAVES" TO PAY THE BILL!!!!!!!!
THE EURO UNION IS STAGGERING AS THEIR FINANCIAL HOUSE OF CARDS COMES TUMBLING DOWN WITH GREECE at the forefront. This difficulty has in turn led to "open immigration" to fill those jobs.
England at one time had a beneficial program of training people to do jobs that normally would go wanting. They made butlers, household help and so forth part of a trained society that took pride in their work and were NO LONGER LOOKED DOWN ON as beneath people. They were simply another segment of society. Unfortunately, the English still maintained a class ridden society, and caused the training that was a good idea to fall by the wayside.
TOO BAD BECAUSE IT WORKS VERY WELL ALL ACROSS VARYING STRATA OF SOCIETY. WORKING IN A GROUP THAT VALUES THEIR LABOR IS WHAT MAKES PEOPLE PROUD. THINK OF THE GROUPS: SPORTS, ARTS, FINANCIAL, LAWYERS, DOCTORS, PILOTS, BROKERS, ADMINISTRATORS ETC. ETC. They ACQUIRE TRAINING, TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK, AND FIND SATISFACTION IN IT AND DO NOT DEEM THEIR EFFORTS beneath them!!!!
